Whittney G. Beard
Coaching, San Diego
Whittney brings over 10 years of professional coaching experience, as well as her background as a lawyer to her coaching and consulting practice at Volta. She spent eight years exclusively coaching lawyers at Orrick in a broad range of areas, including leadership, team management, business development, and effective communication. At Volta, Whittney continues to coach partners and lawyers at all levels. In addition, she is leading the Volta Academy initiative which aims to establish and expand the culture of coaching within law firms by providing foundational and tailored coach training programs.
Whittney began her legal career in 2000 clerking for Chief Judge Jerry Buchmeyer in Federal District Court in the Northern District of Texas. She later practiced at Milbank in the Global Corporate group. She explored in-house legal work and also spent two years teaching law during a fellowship at California Western School of Law. In 2007, Whittney became a professional coach, and has focused her practice on lawyers ever since, both in private practice and at Orrick. Whittney’s coaching style is light and direct – she uses humor, intuition and powerful questions to support her clients to design and complete practices that support them in achieving their professional and personal development objectives.
Whittney received her BA, magna cum laude, in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, graduating as a member of the Order of the Coif. She is a certified graduate of Accomplishment Coaching’s coach training program, a one-year, intensive, ICF-certified program. From 2008 through 2012, she co-led coach training programs, where she trained dozens of new coaches in the art and practice of coaching. She is certified to administer the Everything DiSC® assessment as well as The Leadership Circle Profile, a 360 assessment tool.
When she is not working, Whittney has her hands full as a mom to a 4 year old son, who seems to be in perpetual motion and has a need to run everywhere he goes. She lives in her native San Diego, and loves power lifting and spinning, or getting away to the mountains of Mammoth Lakes for skiing with family.
