Using Developmental Assessments to Improve Engagement & Retention

Using the Modern Lawyer Competency Index to uncover areas of strength and growth

An Am Law 20 firm approached Volta about conducting a year-long program for a cohort of women leaders at the firm focused on engagement, retention, and leaning into leadership roles and positions.

Leadership Development

Our Process

The goals of the program were to expand the participants’ thinking through cutting-edge content and identification of critical leadership development skills, leverage coaching sessions to develop business plans and remain accountable, and strengthen internal relationships with other women partners, creating a community of leaders that actively promote and support one another.

Because of the length of the program and the nature of the group, we decided to use a few approaches, including leadership coaching, roundtables, workshops, and peer coaching.

Ahead of the program launch, we wanted to understand each participant better and allow them the opportunity to create a roadmap for the program, if desired. In order to do so, we turned to our Modern Lawyer Competency Index, our assessment which measures for the Modern Lawyer Competency Framework – a framework developed based on the behaviors necessary to be a successful lawyer in the context of the modern law firm. We used the Modern Lawyer Competency Index in connection with one-on-one coaching to uncover each participant's areas of strength and growth, and to discuss how, throughout the year-long program, we would support them based on their behaviors and individual career goals.

Result

A few themes and topics surfaced during the program as priorities for the firm and the cohort. These topics included:

  • Business Development

  • Communication/Handling Difficult Conversations
